Rodrigo San Miguel, assistant coach of Casademont Zaragoza, was present on July 4 at the Summer Campus in Albarracín, delivering a tactical talk, signing autographs and posing with nearly 500 kids.
What happened?
The coach, who logged 21 professional seasons and 17 in the ACB, arrived at the Fundación Basket Zaragoza center at 10:00 a.m. He broke down pick‑and‑roll concepts, zone defense and the importance of offensive rebounding. Afterwards, he answered questions about his time in the Liga Endesa and his bench experience.
Why does it matter for Casademont Zaragoza?
The visit strengthens the club’s bond with the Aragonese grassroots. By sharing stories from his 1 200 ACB games, San Miguel showed youngsters the pathway from academy to elite. His call to "enjoy the sport" and "work hard every day" aligns with Casademont Zaragoza’s development policy, which aims to produce players with high basketball IQ and strong work ethic.
What’s next for the Campus?
The program will run four full sessions through mid‑August. Head coach‑to‑be Gonzalo García de Vitoria will travel to Albarracín the following weekend. In total, 125 children took part in the first week, completing three‑point shooting drills, speed exercises and half‑court games. Ten scholarships, funded by the Teruel Provincial Council and the Aragon Government, let children without means attend the campus for free.
What impact does it have on the community?
The project, backed by the Sierra de Albarracín comarca and the local town hall, generates over 1 200 hours of physical activity. Kids learn values such as teamwork, respect and collective effort while improving free‑throw percentages and defensive reading. The initiative cements Albarracín as a summer sports hub in Aragón.
